The real problem when you live in Australia
Most families we speak to have the same worry: nobody notices for a day or two when something goes wrong. Calls happen on weekends, parents say "all fine", and the first sign of trouble is a neighbour's message or a hospital bill.
Distance is not the only issue. Australia is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of India, so your day overlaps well with theirs. It means your parent's morning — when medicines are taken and falls often happen — is your night.
Set up a daily signal, not a weekly call
A short daily check-in beats a long weekly call. The signal you want each day is simple: my parent is reachable, took their medicines, and is not feeling unwell.
- Pick one fixed time in their morning (for example 8:00 AM India time).
- Use WhatsApp buttons instead of asking them to type — "Yes, taken", "Not yet", "Please call me".
- Decide in advance what happens if there is no reply: a reminder, then a phone call, then a message to you, then a neighbour.
- Your best live-call windows from Australia: your lunchtime is their morning; your evening is their afternoon.
Build a local circle of two
Every parent living alone needs at least two people nearby who can physically check in: a neighbour, a relative, the society guard or a trusted driver. Save their WhatsApp numbers and agree, in plain words, that you may ask them to knock on the door if your parent does not respond for a few hours.
Keep the medical basics in one place
- Current medicine list with strengths and timings (a photo of the prescription is a good start).
- Last 12 months of lab reports — HbA1c, lipid profile, thyroid, kidney function, CBC, vitamin D/B12.
- Blood group, allergies, main doctor, preferred hospital and its emergency number.
- A one-page emergency card that you can share on WhatsApp in one tap.
Money, insurance and paperwork from Australia
Keep an emergency fund in India that a relative can use without waiting for you.
Medicare does not cover your parents in India. If you plan to bring parents to Australia to visit, arrange visitor insurance separately.
When you need to travel
Direct and one-stop flights reach major Indian metros in 10–14 hours; decide who in India handles the first day.
How Athnova Care helps
Your parent gets one WhatsApp message a day in their language and taps a button. If they do not reply we remind them, then call them. If they still do not answer we alert you, and then the local contacts you choose. Reports they send on WhatsApp are read and trended, refills and home blood tests are arranged with your approval, and you get a doctor-ready summary every month.
Questions families ask
Is the time difference with India a problem from Australia?
Less than from the Americas — your working day overlaps with their morning, so calls and quick actions are easier.
