Looking after parents in India from Canada: check-ins, emergencies and records

The real problem when you live in Canada

Most families we speak to have the same worry: nobody notices for a day or two when something goes wrong. Calls happen on weekends, parents say "all fine", and the first sign of trouble is a neighbour's message or a hospital bill.

Distance is not the only issue. India is 9.5 hours ahead of Toronto and 12.5 hours ahead of Vancouver in summer. It means your parent's morning — when medicines are taken and falls often happen — is your night.

Set up a daily signal, not a weekly call

A short daily check-in beats a long weekly call. The signal you want each day is simple: my parent is reachable, took their medicines, and is not feeling unwell.

Build a local circle of two

Every parent living alone needs at least two people nearby who can physically check in: a neighbour, a relative, the society guard or a trusted driver. Save their WhatsApp numbers and agree, in plain words, that you may ask them to knock on the door if your parent does not respond for a few hours.

Keep the medical basics in one place

Money, insurance and paperwork from Canada

Arrange access to funds in India ahead of time and keep receipts for any medical transfers.

Provincial health plans do not cover your parents in India. Compare Indian senior-citizen policies and note waiting periods for existing conditions.

When you need to travel

Flights from Toronto and Vancouver usually connect via Europe or the Gulf; plan for a full day of travel and name a person in India who can act meanwhile.

How Athnova Care helps

Your parent gets one WhatsApp message a day in their language and taps a button. If they do not reply we remind them, then call them. If they still do not answer we alert you, and then the local contacts you choose. Reports they send on WhatsApp are read and trended, refills and home blood tests are arranged with your approval, and you get a doctor-ready summary every month.

Questions families ask

Do I need a Canadian service or an Indian one?

You need something that works in India on your parent’s phone and reports to you in Canada — WhatsApp check-ins do both.
