This guide is general information to help families organise care. It is not medical advice — follow your parent's doctor.
Get a reliable machine
- An automatic upper-arm monitor is more reliable than wrist models for most older adults.
- Check the cuff size fits their arm.
Take readings the same way each time
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes, back supported, feet flat.
- Arm resting at heart level, no talking.
- Two readings a minute apart; send the second one.
- Morning before medicines and evening on reading days.
Readings to act on
- 180/120 or higher: contact their doctor urgently; with chest pain, breathlessness, weakness or confusion, call 112.
- Below 90/60 with dizziness or fainting: contact their doctor the same day.
- Consistently above 160/100: book a review.
Share trends, not single numbers
A week of readings with averages is what doctors want. Photos of the machine screen can be read automatically and trended for you.
Questions families ask
