This guide is general information to help families organise care. It is not medical advice — follow your parent's doctor.
Bathroom
- Anti-skid mats and grab bars near toilet and bath.
- A plastic stool for bathing.
- Night light between bedroom and bathroom.
Bedroom and living room
- Remove loose rugs and wires.
- Bed height that lets feet rest flat.
- Torch or switch within reach of the bed.
Stairs and entrances
- Handrails on both sides.
- Contrasting tape on step edges.
- Good lighting at the gate and lift lobby.
Health factors to review with their doctor
- Medicines that cause dizziness or low BP on standing.
- Eyesight and cataracts.
- Vitamin D, B12 and bone health.
- Footwear that grips.
Make falls noticed
The biggest danger is lying on the floor for hours. A daily check-in with a phone call fallback, and a neighbour who can reach the house, shorten that time dramatically.
